I came across gaguri and Sasa’s Top 50 Anime of the Decade list the other day. For some people, a top 50 of the decade list would cover almost their entire fandom. Having only started watching anime in the mid/late 90′s I am probably one of those people (of course I still had to leave out anime that would of made it on the list if it were not for the fact that it aired before 2000, like Trigun, KareKano, Slayers, Evangelion, etc).

Without further ado, top 50 of the decade.
edit1: Oops Grave of the Fireflies is oooollldddd. Thanks, Sasa!
edit2: Removed Excel Saga, that started airing in 1999, and as RyanA suggested, I’ve added the season, year it started airing, and studio. I’ll have some analysis later this week.

  1. Ohhh, I have seen 37 of your shows. Quite a nice choice, but it does look like there are sooo many more classics that you haven’t watched (like Planetes!) I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun watching all the other good stuff!
And oh my God, Grave of the Fireflies is like… from the 80s or something? Haha. Like MushroomSamba said on my blog: Not that it matters all that much really.

  2. yeah I know I’ve got classics I haven’t seen yet (but PlanetES? Really? O_O)

Also, re: Grave of the Fireflies – LOL how did that get in there D:

  3. hmm looks like the top 50 for me will include a lot of movies too

  4. Shit I did my own list but forgot to save it and went for dinner, came back and refreshed the page by reflex and it was gone. Anyway, I divided mine into genres, but I think you’re missing quite a lot of good ones, especially the sports series.

  5. hah tj you got me there. I’ve never finished a sports series … well except maybe Bamboo Blade. Any recs?

  6. Nice list. These “top” list aren’t easy to make. Nice to see FLCL near your top. I’d have to add ef~ to my list though.

  7. Yes, Bamboo Blade! I love sports series and used to watch sooo many when I was young (Captain Tsubasa, Slam Dunk etc. etc.), but now most of them are just so ultra long and I can’t get myself to watch them. But Bamboo Blade is love x 10^6.

Planetes is an all-time favorite by… literally everyone I know! I am rather amazed that you haven’t stumbled upon it yet.

  14. haha your list amuses me as there’s a lot on there that I wouldn’t dream putting on a top anything but bad list XD Great list none the less though! that’s what makes us all so different with our tastes :D
