As with most SHAFT anime (at least for me), its either ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’. With traps, yuri and nekomimi what is there not to love? The animation has some typical SHAFT-ness but not to the point where it got annoying, the voice acting is excellent as Yuu Kobayashi pulls off the dual voiced Maria very well. With an OP that’s highly reminiscent of the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (which I think is one of the best ever, must of watched it 20+ times the first week I saw it) I think its safe to say that this is my favourite new show of the ‘09 winter season! No seriously, did the Maria+Holic OP not remind you of the SZS OP?!

Other notes:

1. Watching the first episode of Maria+Holic with the Super Famicom Voice Module (+CCY) podcast was an interesting experience. I tried watching along with them and let me just say that if it wasn’t my second time watching the first episode, I definitely would of gone insane. There are times when they just go off on a complete tangent and trying to follow 4 people talking AND the show itself was just damn near impossible. They had so much to talk about during hte episode, but after it ended the discussion kinda went south. And I wish they would just shut up abit during the text intensive parts of the episode :P But overall it was a fun experience.

2. I think everyone has seen the “Matsurika Hero” gifs already, I just wish it was animated a bit better so I could make a wallpaper out of it >.< Btw, Maria jumping on ladders = awesome. (and I like the second GIF more, the one without a pause)

3. I watched the OP 6+ times today. And I really loved Koda’s unconventional “karaoke” of the OP, it fits too damn well (Someone get her a job at SHAFT).

Maria+Holic OP / HANAJI

and this Phoneix Wright/SZS parody is pure win.

  2. Yeah, the story’s more of an alright, but the arts, man, I love the arts.
    SHAFT at their best yet.

  3. Maria is the best trap for the season, Matsurika is just plain AWESOME, Kanako is a pity, the show spawns girls of different moe genre. It sure is a WIN.

  4. I finally caught up with new anime. This show is LOVE.

Why is SHAFT so awesome? I don’t even know why I watch their shows. When I think back on them, I wonder – why is the show funny?

I never find out, but in the end I find myself enjoying their shows every time.
