After 25 episodes, Macross Frontier comes to an end. It started strong, but I felt that midway through, the show kinda lost direction with its attmepts at character development and inconsistent animation quality. That being said, the last episode was so totally awesome that I just might be willing to forgive them. You see, the last episode had exactly what I wanted when I first decided to watch Macross, music, Alto hime and mecha!!

Story:
Sorry, love triangles that don’t resolved sucks. And penalty for lack of character development (I mean how many times have we heard Ranka say “I won’t lose” to Sheryl??). There were also some pacing issues too, I mean I didn’t really buy the explanation in the last episode, but I was bought over with lots of flashing lights and explosions.
Art:
If not for the somewhat inconsistent standards in the second half of the series, I would probably given this a 9. Oh, and -1 for not enough tentacles on Grace in the last ep :P Again, explosions and flashing lights won me over.
Character:
Well, we had a whole range of unforgettable characters (except for maybe Nanase). Ranka is, obviously, my favorite, followed closely by Klan. Michael was pretty cool too, until he failed and got sucked out into deep space. Oh and Alto wearing Sheryl’s earring ? no.
Enjoyment:
Definitely enjoyable. I think it had a very strong start and a strong ending (I watched the last episode 3 times -_-; so ’nuff said). All the tunes were catchy, though I don’t know why they didn’t get May’n to just do Sheryl’s talking voice as well?
Some random thoughts:
- If Sheryl’s Vajara disease was transmitted via bodily fluids, doesn’t it mean it can spread when she kisses Alto?
- Gayest earring a man can possibly wear. But then again Alto-hime pulls it off nicely.

- Did they ever explain what organization Grace was working for? (or maybe it was just her and her other 2 friends… whoever those voices belonged to in the recap episode)
- Alto FAILS for not choosing Ranka (plus whats with these corny lines?? “You’re both my wings??” “Charge! Love Heart!!!” … oh well)

To understand “Charge! Love Heart!” or as the original title goes “Totsugeki Love Heart!” watch Macross 7 :) Basara pulls it of real nice.
With Ranka, Alto went ahead and joined SMS, with Sheryl Alto grew as a boy to a man :p
Thus, they are his wings as they give him strength. For Klan her wings should be Michael, for Ozma Ranka and Cathy. Etc etc.
You need to get out more to understand these things :p
Oh well, now I really want a Watashi wa kare wa Pilot duet with Sheryl and Ranka, damn why didn´t they continue on it!!
Last episode of Macross F sucked so hard that words can hardly justify it.
We have plot that rocks and steadily climaxes, only to have it rushed and spit out faster than the speed of fail. Ranka is still a damn kid, Sheryl is (somehow) not killed off by her disease, and Alto thinks that both of the little girls in his life have cooties.
Oh, and let’s not forget that failure of a final battle song.
Staff 1: “Instead of making an epic duet exclusively for the final fight, let’s combine ALL of the singles and put them in one!”
Staff 2: “Wow, you’re a genius! And after that gets done, we’ll combine Ranka’s song with Sheryl’s song and everything will be fucking fabulous!”
Staff 1: “Yeah I think so too. We’re so awesome! Fan’s will love us for gypping the song and rushing the ending! We’ll be heroes among anime fans!”
Staff 2: “Yeah, like those guys who did Gundam SEED Destiny!”
I wouldn´t have minded that they sung Watashi wa kare wa Piloto together. But just that freaking short temptation is bad I tell you!!
I need to find some time soon to write up something similar to this post… damnit!! Why can´t I write about it.
Everything’s fine. Alto gets both Ranka and Sheryl, so it’s a happy ending for everyone.
Charge! Love Heart!!! is a reference to the Fire Bomber song “Totsugeki Love Heart” from Macross 7. Ozma’s a big fan, it’s the silly rock tune he plays in his VF during the one episode whose premise I don’t remember right now. Alto calls it a “folk oldie.”
Explosions and flashing lights really did end up being the thing that kept bringing me back, too. Certainly wasn’t the pacing.

and manga, its not like I didn’t understand the fact Alto wanted Sheryl and Ranka to be his wings, but:
as you said, Klan has Michael, Ozma has Cathy, yet Alto needs both Ranka and Sheryl? And no matter how you look at it, the line was still corny, I didn’t need him to SAY it to understand what he was thinking.

@ otou-san, Ozma plays that in his car in the second ep when he and Alto travels to the SMS Quarter for the first time.
Then he listens to My Soul For You at the beginning of one ep and then we are treated to an instrumental version of Try Again as well as the song itself in the same ep :) And the song you´re thinking of is Try Again that he plays in his valkyrie when he throws Brera of in why they need Ranka´s song. if missles don´t work we have guns, if guns don´t work we have knives or something like that.
So Ozma is a big big fan of Fire Bomber, as well as Bobby. And why wouldn´t they be fans? They are a great group.
@ Cokematic, let´s just say Alto has grown to have Sheryl AND Ranka as his wings. As he in the beginning were using only one of them you could say. But when he finally understood, he needs both of them as they are equally dear to him.
