I have never played Disgaea 1 and 2, hell, I never even owned a PS2 (yeah .. i know) and it wasn’t until 6-7 years ago that I actually bough a used PlayStation.

However, I love my PS3 even if I never end up finishing any of the games I get (Guitar Hero III? MGS4? GTA IV? Elder Scrolls VI?). For those of you who don’t know, the PS3 really lacks good RPGs. Yeah, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is fine and all, but honestly its too dark for me. Assassin’s Creed? Never played it but my answer will probably be the same. Sure it was fun running around killing townsfolk and guards in Oblivion, but I never really got into the storyline.

I ordered my copy of Disgaea3 about 2 weeks after it’s North American release via PlayAsia and I love these guys! Put in the order at 1am on Thursday, and on Friday I got a phone call from the delivery guy but I wasn’t at home so he came back Saturday morning. Free shipping too!

There are people out there who criticize D3 for it’s “not worthy of a PS3″ sprites, but I’m a sucker for these types of RPGs. For someone who’s never played any Disgaea before, the tuorials were easy to follow and the gameplay was fun (though I’ve heard complaints that it is very similar to the first two Disgaea games). The problem I have with turn based rpgs is that I get bored mashing the attck menu button. Thus I’ve always been drawn more towards the Star Ocean Second Story and Legend of Mana type games.

Although D3’s gameplay is turn-based, the fact that you can at move around makes it must more appealing that the menu based RPGs. It calls for some strategic placement and movement of your party (of 10 !?) and the throwing system is super fun (although I always forget about throwing Prinny and he explodes and dies orz). The magichange and item/classroom world system is kinda cool too, though I haven’t used those much. (I’m pretty sure Manga, uses it alot more than I do.)

My current PS3 background

Great things about Disgaea 3

  • to play through the story, you don’t really need to level grind. With some half decent stratergy you can probably taken on monsters that are much higher level than your party.
  • you can get through the story very very quickly (great for someone like me who doesn’t actually have alot of time to devote to Disgaea 3), but there are alot of things to see and do in Desgaea besides the main storyline. Item world, classroom world, unlocking several generic classes, etc. (They don’t put a level cap of 9999 for no reason.)
  • Sprites are rare these days, and I love them
  • Sapphire and Raspberyl
  • Ufotable

My one minor complaint, is that the English voices and get annoying, especially Raspberyl’s, which is a shame because even though I don’t use her much in the game, she’s an awesome character. In the end, I switched to the Japanese track after chapter 1.

The storyline is entertaining, the jokes usually hit and the characters are very likeable. I’d recommend this game to anyone, like me, who has not gotten into Disgaea franchise yet. You don’t need any prior knowledge before picking this game up (but then again, what kind of otaku doesn’t know Flonne and Etna?) and you can play this as much (or as little) as you want! I Finished the first cycle (played through the storyline once) in under 35 hours of playtime, but there is much much more to this world and now I’m off to explore it.

And I need to get Flonne and Etna to join my party.

ps.  Can’t wait for North American version downloadable characters, whenever that may be.

  1. Lucky for you, you can play the PS2 Disgaeas as well with your PS3. I, on the other hand, am stuck with the one and only Disgaea for the PSP… THERE’S AN IDEA!

  2. Yes, I do use magichange somewhat: Reason? It´s way easier to lvl a lvl 28 Beryl to a lvl 64 Beryl by using Magichange with Mao and killing of 5 lvl 52 monsters than having to fight equal lvl monsters with Beryl for a long long time :)

On my next cycle I think I´ll be using my Empusa more to change her into I think it was a spear so she can get some levels.

Flonne and Etna(along with laharl) will join your party in the post game when you´ve finished some other battles before them :)

What most people complained about when it came to Disgaea 3 was that NIS still used 2d graphics and didn´t make it into a whole 3d game.

In my regard, they made the right choice since the sprites are wonderful and look better than ever in HD!! How can anyone complain about this? They are freaking idiots.

Sofar I haven´t been in either classroom or item world that much. I need to get better weapons and levels to do that. Which is why I think Í´ll restart the game and start from chapter1 again. Then I´ll be able to get more endings along the way as well.

And as I´ve told you, there is no “real” levelcap. Sure you can only bring your characters to lvl 9999 untill they stop gaining EXP, but with reincarnation you can basically get as many levels as you want :)

When I want to power level my characters I will use the classroom world as that is the only way to get the Big Bang fist skill on my human characters that don´t get enough INT to get a 3×3 magic attack and be able to kill of enemies with that. Mao might be able to do it… I need to try it out sometime.

Throwing prinnies is a lot of fun :) On stages with mainly prinnies, take out your own and clear the stage with a simple throw and watch the nice fireworks. They´ve had atleast one stage in every Disgaea game that have only been prinnies and it´s always easy to finish them of :)

But the bad part is that the bonus gauge doesn´t highten when you throw prinnies.

  3. @ritchan Actually my retarded 40GB Asian PS3 CANNOT play PS2 games :(

@manga I love the sprites… if it wasn’t sprites it just wouldn’t be the same. And I do remeber the prinny stage … wasn’t it in chapter 1? or was it 2? And at the rate I’m going, I don’t think I’ll ever reach lvl 9999 -_-

  4. Try Corpse Eater in chapter 7

After the initial run it´s a great place for leveling up since there is a 3×3 monster formation that is standing on EXP + 100% so get your mage up to stuff and voila, a great leveling map, otherwise you´ll have to defeat enemies with skills, throwing or moving characters so that they can attack the enemies.

And if you take time to level items up or just want to get trough all stages, like getting Laharl, Flonne and Etna to join your team, you´re going to need some levels. And therefore reaching lvl 9999 is far away sure but not impossible.

Just wait till you have the skill Big Bang and then the cave of ordeals 4 where there are 9 lvl 400 enemies to defeat in one strike. You´ll be gaining a lot of levels there if you can take them out in one hit. When that isn´t working, increase the enemy level by passing the stronger enemies bill and repeat. Hell it´s boring but wow, it gives results :)

  5. Have you downloaded the content for Disgaea 3 yet? 4 new characters as well as being able to create Nekomatas!!

Along with two new wallpapers if you get the set. Kinda nice new content but still, needs to be free and not cost…

  6. wonggggthemage says:

can someone help me out? i got cave of ordeals 4 but for some reason i only got the berzerkers to lvl 2040 or something. i can’t pass the bill for stronger enemies because its always says max out. please help me!
